In order to make it to my 8 AM Radiology appointment, I had to stay awake all night. The hour between 4 and 5 AM ticked ever so slowly by. I left the house at 5:30 and arrived at the bus stop 6AM. Thirty minutes later, shivering with just a sweater for warmth, I saw my bus..on the other side of the divided three lane. It was still dark. As I started walking towards another stop that was just a mile away, I could make it if I kept walk briskly. At least I knew I would be warmer walking. I approached it, less than 50 yards away, the bus pulled out. I could see the ominous dark rain clouds as the day began breaking. I had not thought to bring an umbrella. It would be 30 minutes before another bus would be available.
On the bus, the digital clock seemed to race to 7:30. I called. The V.A. clinic’s switchboard was on automation. At 8 AM, I got through the automation, but it did not announce the extension I needed, so hit the number 8, for anyone to pick-up. Oh God, the frustration of it all.
“Please stay on the line, or you will lose your place in the queue.”
Finally, a human being. I ask her to transfer me to Radiology. Unable to comply, she transferred my call to Administration. Finally, 8:21, I got through to radiology. Explaining my situation, she was so kind to ask if I would like to reschedule. I begged her to let me keep this one,I would just be another 30 or 45 minutes. She agreed, and thanked me for calling to let them know of my lateness.
9AM. I was in and out in no time. Now, just get home.
It was 2PM when I got off the bus. It began sprinkling, by the time I am at my front door, the sky opened with a cold steady rain. I was thankful I did not have to walk in it.
I knew I couldn’t go to bed yet, unable to think, I left my computer turned off. I wondered what the topic would be, but could not make myself look. While watching TV, fell asleep during “The Greatest Dad” with Robin Williams as the title character, but woke up during the library dedication scene. I got to see the best part. I thought how ironic, watching this movie, with the main character desirous of writing something good enough to be published and my wanting to write something significant in my blog.
I felt I kinda knew Mr. Williams from some of the stories his Transportation Captain, (my friend, Ronald) would share with his sister and me. I have always felt a certain kinship to Mr. Williams. Do I tell these secrets that were shared….
No. Not today.
That was the fifth. This is all I can write today.
I will catch up. I will not give up.
